The politics of marriage. Marriages are complicated. It’s not just two people coming together. It’s two families coming together. Two lifestyles coming together. Two histories of trauma and disease coming together. It’s more than just 2 individuals. It’s two sets of friends and past experiences. Marriage is tricky. It’s not just a social contract but a legal one. It’s two people’s financial habits and work ethic merging together. People don’t appreciate how much more goes into a marriage than just being single. Marriage is hard. It’s all glitz and glamour at the beginning but what’s it like in real life. On a Tuesday evening at 7 pm when one kid is screaming and the other is sick. What is it like then? What about when one person’s family member dies and you’re at the funeral. How about then? What’s when a marriage is really tested. Do you love and support each other no matter what? Do you feel like a team going to conquer the world together, not as one? That’s a real marriage. It’s also friendship just as much as it is anything else. Marriage is complicated and yet I want that one day. Even with all the shit that comes with it. Make sure you do it right.
